A blower door test utilizes a fan with an adjustable temporary door to depressurize the home. The fan is used in conjunction with a pressure gage (manometer) to establish a constant pressure difference between the inside and the outside of the home, while measuring the volume of air passing through the fan. These readings along with the data from the home (volume, mechanical systems, insulation, etc.) are used to create a HERS score.
While the fan is operating, all air leaks in the home can be located by simply walking through the home and feeling the drafts around windows doors and walls with the back of your hand, or by using a small smoke machine. |
