DUCT PRESSURE TEST

Duct leakage costs American consumers about $5 billion per year, wasting the equivalent energy used by 13 million cars per year, and is equal to the estimated annual oil production from the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, so yes, it’s a big deal.

If any of the ductwork in a home is located in an unconditioned area (attic or crawlspace) or if any ductwork is located on an outside wall then the duct pressure test is important as all leaks are magnified by the higher pressures involved. In some cases, uneven temperatures throughout the home are caused by duct leakage even if they are entirely within the building envelope.

The duct pressure fan or “duct blaster” is attached to a main duct and all the registers are sealed. The fan, like the blower door maintains a constant pressure difference, while measuring the airflow through the fan to give an accurate reading of duct leakage. When used in conjunction with the blower door, an accurate measurement of duct leakage to the outside is possible.
